First let me say that Daphnis looks very feminine. I interpret a very pure and deep love between the two, at a time when people weren’t so uptight about sexuality and nudeness. It seems they spent a lot of time in their birthday suits. It reminds me of Adam and Eve before Eve was tempted with the forbidden fruit. They appear to be connected spiritually. The way they look at one another as if engrossed by every word that comes from the others mouth. Daphnis seems fixated Chloe, she has his undivided attention when she’s playing her instrument it’s like he can’t take his eyes off of her. He is her protector and wants to make sure nothing hurts her or is uncomfortable, like in the painting by Louis Hersent, I call it “removing a thorn”. They are almost like the young innocent couple in the blue lagoon. It would have been a beautiful place if we could have maintained that same innocence and type of love for one another.
