And yes, your commentary is excellent. Emma Hamilton learned French, Italian, to play the harp and harpsichord, invented a form of pantomime she called her Attitudes, devised clothing for them that influenced Empire fashion, was offered a contract to sing at the Royal Opera in Madrid, and, if all of this was not enough, influenced Maria Carolina, the queen of Naples, to allow Nelson to have his ships supplied in Sicily despite a treaty with France. Nelson was thus able to win the Battle of the Nile giving England control of the Mediterranean, ultimately the ability to defeat Napoleon, and become the ruler of the waves.

The silent film The Divine Lady (1929) with Corrine Griffith is absolutely terrific, a must-see (Romney called her Divine Lady). That Hamilton Woman with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh is also a great film.

I’m glad I came upon it while looking for information about Ariadne and her golden thread. I’m going to presently read all your blog entries which are obviously well researched and most informative.

Comment on Hapsburg Exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art by marilyn morawiecki https://nonahyytinen.com/hapsburg-exhibit-at-the-minneapolis-institute-of-art/comment-page-1/#comment-1929 Sun, 19 Apr 2015 23:29:23 +0000 http://nonahyytinen.com/?p=4852#comment-1929 I was truly touched by this collection. To keep all of this for hundreds of years is overwhelming. The Crowning of Thorns by Corregio was exceptionally touching. I am amazed at the realism of the art work. It makes you feel as if you are there with all these exciting, amazing Hapsburgs and all the artists beautiful paintings. I am so glad I was able to see a part of history so vivid and alive. Thank you for bringing it here. I only wish I would have purchased some prints while I was there. Will there be any prints for sale? I am captivated by the painting of Jupiter and Io and Susanna and the Elders. Marilyn Morawiecki

Your commentary is excellent. I am reading ENGLAND’s MISTRESS -The Infamous Life of Emma Hamilton by Kate Williams. I highly recommend it.

Comment on Portrait of John Maattala by Nona https://nonahyytinen.com/portrait-of-john-maattala/comment-page-1/#comment-1924 Wed, 28 Jan 2015 21:15:52 +0000 http://nonahyytinen.com/?p=4356#comment-1924 In reply to Rochelle Choirniere.

Thank you for commenting, Rochelle. If you are John’s younger sister, then you are my second cousin too. Do you remember whether we’ve ever met? Hopefully we will in the future. I’m sorry I didn’t see your comment earlier. I’ve been busy working on my mother’s house and have had little time for my Website lately. I am so sorry that I won’t get to know John better. I met him at a Maattala Family Reunion once and spent most of the time talking with him. I thought he was great. He lent me a book on how to build a sauna, which someday I hope to act on. Is it only in our old age that we finally get a sauna of our own? I enjoyed painting Marja-leena’s mom, Kiirtu, as well. As I’ve been going through Mom’s mail from years ago — she saved everything from at least 1996 — I’ve come across several letters in Finnish from Kiirtu that I would like to have Marja-leena translate for me. Thank you so much for your kind words about the paintings. Take care!

What a wonderful portrait of My brother John. Your painting of him and the one you did of Marja-leena’s mom are so beautiful. You truly have an amazing gift. Thank you for capturing John In his true spirit. I know how happy Marja- Leena is with this. When she first received it she sent me the text with a picture of the painting attached to text. I now have it saved on my phone. Thank you so much once again. Rochelle.

Comment on Santa Fe, Third Installment by Robert Rodriguez https://nonahyytinen.com/santa-fe-third-installment/comment-page-1/#comment-1916 Thu, 25 Sep 2014 15:11:24 +0000 http://nonahyytinen.com/wp/santa-fe-third-installment#comment-1916 Aren’t the pueblos great?!! I think the Kivas are mostly in the ground because of the people’s origin stories. They came to this world from another level below this, and out from a hole in the ground called a Sipapu. There is a Sipapu in every Kiva, symbolic of that original portal. I think the whole Kiva is symbolic of the original hole, and also why they enter and leave through a hole in the roof.

The Sipapu is accurate, the reasons are just my guess. And now that I have written this, you probably have already learned it from about 100 other readers. Anyway, thanks for the blog and your descriptions of your pueblo visit.

Comment on Arcadia and Daphnis and Chloe by Danielle Thomas https://nonahyytinen.com/daphnis-and-chloe/comment-page-1/#comment-1851 Wed, 19 Jun 2013 22:36:31 +0000 http://nonahyytinen.com/?p=4003#comment-1851 I like art and I think the paintings are very provocative but in an innocent sense. First let me say that Daphnis looks very feminine. I interpret a very pure and deep love between the two, at a time when people weren’t so uptight about sexuality and nudeness. It seems they spent a lot of time in their birthday suits. It reminds me of Adam and Eve before Eve was tempted with the forbidden fruit. They appear to be connected spiritually. The way they look at one another as if engrossed by every word that comes from the others mouth. Daphnis seems fixated Chloe, she has his undivided attention when she’s playing her instrument it’s like he can’t take his eyes off of her. He is her protector and wants to make sure nothing hurts her or is uncomfortable, like in the painting by Louis Hersent, I call it “removing a thorn”. They are almost like the young innocent couple in the blue lagoon. It would have been a beautiful place if we could have maintained that same innocence and type of love for one another.
